Netgear Range Extender

I have a Netgear Range Extender Model Number WN2500RPv2-- Model No.-I would like to have someone explain to me in simple terms how to connect it to my Hitron Router/Modem Model Name CGNM-that I am renting from my ISP{Suddenlink}. The netgear has 4 ports to connect different devices to it. Dish receiver, Samsung BluRay, Denon home theater receiver.

Please Please help me with simple and easy steps to follow.

Thank you,

The below instructions will be the same for your router.  It is pretty straight forward.

Hi Fox

Let see if I can do this and I will let you know if I have any problems. Thank you Sir.
Hi Basem,

Please Please help me with simple and easy steps to follow.
Giving step by step instructions is going to be difficult for this question because you will need to be lucky enough to find an expert here who is using the same model Extender and Router/Modem that you are. That said, we can offer help in the way of clarifying any instructions you don't understand or need clarifications on. I'll include a list of pages that I think you should find helpful below.

The link to an article on Netgear's Knowledgebase given by expert FOX above looks quite good, so I'd suggest exploring that.

You might also find the following to be useful as well;

Also, check the wealth of information available on the following page;

In particular, I'd recommend you download the following documents.

  • Ensure that your Extender unit has the latest Firmware installed. More info about the latest firmware to your unit can be found and viewed here

Hopefully, the above links should give you enough information to get you started. If you go through the above and then ask for clarifications on any aspect of the documents and information on the web pages you don't understand, then we can try to help you by clarifying any particular parts you don't understand.

I hope that's helpful.

Regards, Andrew
Thanks Andrew. One point though-The model number only list CGNM no numbers after that. Please allow me to perform the steps needed. If I run into problems I will let you know. Thank you again my friend.

You're very welcome Basem. If you need further help, just post here and I'll try to do my best to help further.

Regards, Andrew
Sorry Andrew but I am not that you noticed that I was asking a question in the previous post. I wanted to check if the model number that you listed in the links would apply to the one that I have which mine is ONLY CGNM with numbers like the one inthe links.

Hitron CGNM-2250 Advanced WiFi Modem - Install and User Guide - I copied this from your post.

Thank you Andrew
No worries Basem. I can't tell from that screenshot either, because it only shows the Part Number and MAC address.

If you're able to get into its configuration screen via a web browser, it should show it there, but seeing as you're renting this unit from your ISP, probably the easiest way for you to confirm is to just give their support number a call and ask them if its the CGNM-2250 or some other build.

Regards, Andrew
Ok I will Thanks.
This may not work at all.

First you must ensure your Hitron Router even supports connecting to a Netgear Extender.

Normally the way you'll extend networks...

1) Hitron Router - Place into bridge mode.

2) Hitron Router - Disable all WiFi transmission.

3) Connect a primary NetGear device, like a Nighthawk to your Hitron Router.

Your Nighthawk will then handle DHCP IP assignment.

4) Extend your network starting with your Nighthawk, never your Hitron.

Extension can be done via the device you mention above or using Powerline Ethernet for long haul extension.
First: No points to me for this post please.

Second: I agree with David above.

I have a Hitron Modem in my Home Office. Rogers (ISP) put it in Bridged Mode (Ask your ISP to do this).

Range Extenders (vs Access Points) are mostly a waste of time. If you CAN connect them they reduce signal strength.

I use a top quality Cisco RV134AC wireless router for main wireless.
I ran an Ethernet cable upstairs.
To that I connected a Ubiquiti Access point that uses the same SSID as the Cisco.
Excellent wireless coverage throughout.

Hitron: Put in Bridged Mode.
Attach the WAN port of your router to a LAN port of the Hitron.  Probably number 1. Router will get an External IP address.

Now all LAN ports of the Router will have your internal IP address.
Range Extenders (also often referred to as wireless repeaters) are most certainly "not" a waste of time. Employing the use of one or the other depends on the needs of each individual and one of the main benefits of using an extender includes no additional hard wiring needing to be installed into a building.

Range Extenders can also be a far cheaper and simpler solution than installing access point(s) if the end result that is being sought is to simply eliminate WiFi dead spots when speed isn't a major consideration.

It is almost ALWAYS possible to connect a range extender to just about "any" wireless capable router and they do "not" have any effect on "reducing" signal strength. They merely extend the same strength as what they receive from wherever they are positioned. In short, they can be quite useful indeed.

What is a Range Extender?

As its name implies, a range extender lengthens the reach of an existing Wi-Fi network. Since range extenders connect wirelessly to Wi-Fi routers, they must be placed where the Wi-Fi router's signal is already strong, not in the location of the actual dead spot. For instance, if your router is in the basement of a two-story building, installing a range extender on the ground floor (where coverage from the Wi-Fi router is still strong) will eliminate potential dead zones on the second floor.

What is an Access Point?

An access point is a device that creates a wireless local area network, or WLAN, usually in an office or large building. An access point connects to a wired router, switch, or hub via an Ethernet cable, and projects a Wi-Fi signal to a designated area. For example, if you want to enable Wi-Fi access in your company's reception area but don’t have a router within range, you can install an access point near the front desk and run an Ethernet cable through the ceiling back to the server room.

Hope that's helpful.

Hi Andrew

I brought the Netgear 2500RPV2 N600 Range Extender to the office and it was very close to the Hitron Router/Modem. Turned it on and I looked for it in the WiFi networks by clicking on the Monitor icon? in the system tray on the bottom right hand side and it did not show up as the document that you sent me stated. The green power light is on and a green lock with WiFi signal is lit solid green. I tried to reset the Range Extender and powered it on and off with no luck. I wanted to mention this to you , I don't know that this might be a reason for not having the extender showing up in the list of networks. My computer is connected via an Ethernet connection to the Hitron Router/Modem. Please know what do I need to do next.

Thank you Andrew.

First: No points to me for this post.

Please don't be this way. You are are trying to make me look like a bad person. I give the points for the best solution for my problem that is the easiest and simple steps to understand and above all if it helped me. If your solution helped me then I definitely would give you the points(helpful) or best solution.

Thank you Mr.John and may the lord bless you sir.
Hi Basem,

Please know what do I need to do next.

As I'm not personally familiar with the Router and Extender that you have (and purchased), please give me some time to read over the documents that I linked you to so see what the correct process should be with regards to your modem/router. Once I've done that, I'll post another reply for you.

By the way, with regards to this comment I made earlier:

>> you're renting this unit from your ISP, probably the easiest way for you to confirm is to just give their support number a call and ask them if its the CGNM-2250 or some other build.

Did you end up doing that? It would be really useful to know which exact model and build of modem/router you have because the process can differ between different models of the same branded router.

Regards, Andrew
The Model No. is CGNM which is the same as CGNM2250.
Thanks for confirming that for me Basem, that will make it easier to understand how to help you configure your router. I've been a bit busy with work at the moment but will return to this question for you as soon as I can. Thanks for being patient :)
No problem my friend. If everyone was as kind and helpful as you are, the world will be in a better shape. Thank you Andrew.
Andrew

My extender is plugged in the wall outlet very close to the router. There are 3 icons lit on it . The power is on green, the 5 G with 4 bars and finally the Lock with wifi on both sides on the top. I think that means it is secured. The problem is not showing up in the wireless networks in my PC  when I click on the Monitor icon. BTW, I am connected to the router via ethernet connection.

Hi Basem,

Firstly, my apologies for taking so long to get back to you on this question. Have been flat out with both work and EE admin related works.

The Model No. is CGNM which is the same as CGNM2250.
Great, thanks for confirming that. I've looked over Product Page of your router and now had a read of its PDF Data Sheet. Looks like you have quite a good little unit there.

That all sounds fine and "should" work?

I've never struck any issues in connecting up a Range Extender to a wide variety of routers, so can I suggest you go through the troubleshooting steps on this page:

https://kb.netgear.com/1110/Troubleshooting-wireless-networks

Let me know if there is anything you don't understand in the above document and associated links and I'll try to help clarify.

Let's start there and see how you go. If still not resolved, post back with more details and I'll try my best to further help.

Thanks Andrew . Please give me some time to go over these guides and see what I will come up with. Thank you again my friend.
No worries Basem, take your time. If you go through those articles carefully, I'm almost certain you will resolve your problem.

Take your time and just post back here if you have any additional questions.

I am sorry Andrew it took me a little longer to do this. I had to connect the extender to the ethernet port on my CPU and then I was able to access the www.miwifiext.com and went through all the steps for 2.4 and 5 GHZ frequencies and the final step I had to check the radio button after and then clicked continue and I got this screen . See capture. I disconnected the extender and brought closer to the BluRay player and connected it there all the lights are green and I saw the SSID of my router followed by _2EXT and _5EXT on my cell phone and I connected to the _5EXT. So I don't know why I got that screen from the setup. I am connected currently via ethernet connection from the Hitron router.

Hi Basem,

I've never connected the extender you've purchased so give me a little time to go through those articles I pointed you to myself and I'll get back to you soon.
