Please explain the "FOUND" folder after chkdsk

Running Windows 7 SP-1 32-bit, I recently used chkdsk to check and repair a drive which contains a few TB of data.  Over 100 GB of files appeared in a "FOUND" folder.  Apparently these were salvaged, after having been corrupted?  I'd appreciate an explanation about this.  Where these files and folders originally resided is not immediately apparent.

Did you lose any data? If not you do not need to worry about these files.
These files are partial or corrupted file found during the scan

Thank you both.  It is difficult to determine whether data has been lost, because 3 TB of it are contained in the drive which was checked.  The FOUND.000 folder contains mostly intact files, which open normally.  It would be a challenge to find where those files originated, so I'm planning to keep them, on the remote chance they may be useful later.
in most cases, i just delete them; i never found it worthwile keeping them
