Backing up Active Directory

I'm trying to backup Active Directory on two Server 2012 domain controllers.

I tried using Arcserve backup software, but when I run a test restore (from Arcserve) the System State folder and sub folders are empty. Not sure if I need an agent for Arcserve to backup Active Directory.

Can I backup Active Directory running on the Server 2012 domain controllers using Windows backup and then backup the Windows backup file to tape using Arcserve?  Would I be able to restore Active Directory from the Windows backup in the event that both domain controllers went down?

Thanks,
cja

Should I run the backup on both domain controllers? One being the FSMO and the other being the secondary?

Thanks,

ow often should AD be backed up? Daily, weekly?
I set up Server Backup to backup AD daily to a second drive installed in the server.  Where can I find the backup files so I can back them up to tape using Arcserve?

Thanks,
cja
Windows backup takes control of the whole drive so don't think you can.

Depends on your RPO/RTO.

Do you have AD Recycle Bin enabled?
I found the folder called WindowsImageBackup and set that to be backed up to tape by Arcserve.

Thanks for your help.
