If you don't have a license from Dell, and can't get one for some reason, you could install Hyper-V Free I guess, then put the two licensed Server 2016s on that.<br />

I have at least one client that has things setup that way, and as far as I can recall off the top of my head, the Hyper-V Free was joined to the domain (controlled from its guest).<br />

I did not set it up, but I'm pretty sure that's what they have.<br />
<br />
I haven't looked, but there is possibly a Hyper-V Free 2019 out now. &nbsp;If so, probably best to use that.<br />

If Dell shipped OS media with the server - and I believe you have to specifically request media nowadays when you place an order - you can use it to install the OS on those VMs, and you can use the product key on the server's COA sticker to activate them. (This may not even be necessary; they may auto-activate.)<br />
<br />
If Dell did not ship OS media with the server, you can download the evaluation edition of 2016 from Microsoft and use it to install the OS on the VMs. Once it's installed, grab the product key from the server's COA sticker and run the following command on each VM to convert it to the non-eval edition:<br />

<b>dism /online /Set-Edition:ServerStandar<wbr />d /AcceptEula /ProductKey:<i>&lt;product_key&gt;</i></b><br />
<br />
Include the dashes in the product key (but don't include the &lt;&nbsp;and &gt;&nbsp;symbols).<br />

Hi everyone, I'm looking over the posts to see how to distribute points. To provide some more information regarding the previous PowerEdge server and what happened regarding licensing. We purchased a PowerEdge from Dell and the key was operating license key was missing. My understanding it was available via Dell when needed and they informed me it was located on a sticker on the back of the server. Routine right? Turns out the sticker was not on the server and I was given bad information from Dell support rushing to install a VM's to stay on schedule. Looking back I should have installed the VM's prior to the actual installation date but this isn't about putting blame on Dell or myself more so for educational purposes and moving forward. I installed a VM using a trial and when it ran out I expected to have the correct key to enter. Now I realize this is not an option. Because there would have been downtime Microsoft was nice enough to replace the keys and get us back up and running. <br />

Regarding this post I have the server operating media and verified the key is on the back of the server. I'm getting ready to install two VM's and don't believe I'll have any issues. If so will definitely post. <br />

@DrDave242 I've done this in the past and it's been 50/50. I've seen Microsoft make it all work but they're Microsoft. When it doesn't work it ends up causing allot of issues for obvious reasons. Activation issues basically shut down the server.

I've never had that Dism command fail, and I've run it a number of times. It does sometimes take quite a while to complete, though, while other times it's pretty quick. Not sure why that is.

Best way to license 2 free VM's on Server 2016 Standard

Virtualization is the act of creating a virtual (rather than actual) version of something, including (but not limited to) a virtual computer hardware platform, operating system (OS), storage device, or computer network resources. Virtualization is usually the creation of a system that executes separate from the underlying hardware resources, or the creation of an entire desktop for systems located elsewhere, similar to thin clients.

The full GUI install operates similarly to windows 10's "Long Term Servicing Branch" (LTSB) model with cumulative security updates.

Windows Server 2016 has also shifted from a per-processor-and-CAL licensing model to a per-core-and CAL licensing model. This brings Windows Server's licensing more in line with Microsoft's other products and makes hybrid-cloud license planning easier as well.
