I have seven years of GP data that I want to export to QBES.  Any suggestions?

Hi Constance,

I wanted to clarify some things that may help experts weigh in and help you find a solution.
1. What format are the seven years of data currently stored as?
2. What are you hoping to accomplish after exporting it to QBES? Simply consolidating all of your data?

I'll continue to monitor your question to help support you find a solution.

The format all the seven years of data is in is as part of Great Plains. I need to export it and then import it into QBES with as much detail as possible.

I am moving to QBES on the first of the year and  I am hoping to consolidate my data

Thanks,

Constance
Ahhh, thanks for the clarification Constance. I've added a Microsoft Dynamics topic for your question to get experts in that area to view your question.
Hi Constance,

Your request involves quite a few factors, so it isn't something that can be easily answered in a single EE question.

All Dynamics GP (aka Great Plains) data is stored in Microsoft SQL Server.  I don't know if QB Enterprise has a GP to QB migration, but I'm guessing Intuit does not offer such a data migration tool specifically for GP.  There may be an Intuit or 3rd party product that helps transfer data from SQL Server to QB.

You will likely need to selectively export the Dynamics GP data from SQL Server to CSV files, which you would then import into QuickBooks.  This can be done using SQL Server Management Studio or SQL Server Integration Services.

The bigger challenge will likely be identifying which data you want to migrate, and how to translate that GP data into a data / file format that QuickBooks can import.

Importing master records, such as customer, vendor, and inventory items will likely be the easiest, but some fields will likely not map directly to QB, such as default GL accounts, vendor/customer class, comment fields, etc.

In general, I (and most ERP consultants) do not recommend migrating detailed historical transaction data.  While it may be possible to do so, it is typically difficult, tedious, very time consuming, and expensive.  Getting the detailed data exported from GP, formatted and transformed for QB, and then successfully imported into QB will likely be a significant project.

Ideally, you would only migrate monthly GL balances for some period (perhaps last year and current YTD), and then bring in open balances or open transactions for customers and vendors.

Your Dynamics GP partner / consultant should be able to assist you to identify the data to export from GP and prepare the data for QB.  There are also quite a few online resources for identifying Dynamics GP data tables for preparing your export queries.  There is also a Dynamics GP Community Forum where you can post more specific questions if necessary.

Let me know if this was helpful.
