The .mpg container is fairly old, so might be many apps no longer play this container.

If you have many old .mpg files, likely best to convert them to .mp4 using h.264 or h.265 codecs for video stream.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_video_container_formats provides a quick glance table for containers + what codecs are supported.

Looks like .mpg containers only support MPEG-1 + MPEG-2 video streams.

It's unlikely most new mobile devices support these video codec formats.

You'll just have to refer to your device specs to see + simple test, play one. If you get an error, then you have no support.

Since .mpg + MPEG video streams haven't been used for years, likely you have an old library, which you'll require converting to .mp4 to play on all current devices.

is it device issue or app issue?
i simply get error message saying cannot play that video

As noci suggested, try VLC for Android, as VLC will play old formats just fine.
