Possible cracked Windows 7 product key

I've got a client with a 4 year old Win7 computer.  He's getting an error (just over the past month): "This computer is not running genuine Windows".

The previous IT person that sold him the computer is not reachable.  I ran Windows Activation and am getting an error about being unable to access slui.exe (which is present).

I went to see what Windows Updates was doing, and it said it couldn't run because the service wasn't running.  Not only wasn't it running, but the service was disabled.  Attempting to run the service results in an error too.

This is all sounding very fishy.  The client is certain that the previous IT person would not have used a cracked operating system, but it sure all seems to be adding up to something suspicious.  Everything I do to resolve this results in an error.

Would you say the chances are good that this is a fraudulent OS install?  Is there a site where you can actually type in a key and have it evaluated?

If a white box computer or a computer had been reinstalled by someone, the chances are very high.

When you try to active, there should be a phone number activation. Call that Microsoft Number. Otherwise call Microsoft Licensing support

M$ is having issues with their licensing servers ,so it may not be totally out of the realm that they screwed up
(again).

Could be file corruption or virus related

No.. At the point of getting errors at every attempt to resolve the issue,  you might want to perform a Repair (requires installation disk and/or backups)

Personally, I'd backup personal files I could, replace the drive and do a clean install keeping the old drive handy in case any files were missed.
If the activation is only failing over the last month I doubt it is pirated software... I have had several Win 7 machines showing that message lately, and then it clears... Not sure of the cause yet, as I have just started looking into the logs.
If you do not know the origin of the installation, then call Microsoft Licensing support as suggested.

Name brand computers have Certificate of Authenticity stickers on the case (Windows 7 and prior) and then you know the licensing is valid.
Can you open up a command prompt and type in the following an d post results. A separate window will open for each command.

slmgr /xpr
slmgr /dli

Over the years VLK keys have been pirated and M$ revokes them when it becomes obvious that there is an issue.
So it is possible, but my problem is why is M$ phoning home to check the validity of an install way after the fact.
you can also run sfc /scannow, or a repair to fix system files

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html            REPAIR
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html         SFC

or wait a couple of days, till MS fixed the problem

You can use this tool to help diagnose why WGA isn't happy with your product activation
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

It will create a text file log you can upload for analysis.  This will contain fragments of your activation key but not enough for it to be copied.

Run the .exe, click continue to analyze registration status and then on the last tab hit to "copy" button to copy the output, either paste into a Notepad file and attach or simply paste into a reply to this thread.
