asked on

USB stick not recognised the FIRST time

i have an ADATA  UV128/32Gb  stick -  works fine, except for one problem :
on different PC's, it says usb device not recognised, the first time i connect it

if i remove it, and reconnect to the SAME connector, all is ok

why is this?  how can it be recognised the first time?
since it is an usb 3 stick, i use an usb 3 port also

First, it seems to be a problem with the stick and not the computers.  I am sure you knew that.

Is it new?

If not, the article below suggests the data may be able to be recovered (I am skeptical)

Hi nobus,

I understand the disk you are mentioning works on some computers the first time you insert it and for some computers you have to remove and insert again before it is recognized.

Does it happen every time? Or only first time you are inserting the disk to a computer? <abye the drivers are being installed (In case this is happening only 1 time). In my case, I have really old USB sticks which sometimes don't get recognized due to USB port issue(loose/old port).

Regards,
Chinmay.

John plse read the FULL question, it works fine, only not the first time
Chinmay it foes so on 3 different PC's  ASUS motherboard, but all different models
i also had one with a connector problem long ago - but that is NOT the case here -  it ALWAYS works the second time

I did read all and what occurred to me from reading other posts is that it might be failing.

It also occurs that something has happened to the stick that is taking time for it to see its files and that may be why it is taking the second time.

it is a new stick (only been used for a month or 2) and it has caught my attention now
it does indeed take time to open the stick - maybe more than  others

It may have a small compatibility issue with your system. I cannot think of any other reason if new.

While this sounds really strange(detecting the drive only second time), only thing that comes to my mind is, try it on non ASUS PC and see if you can reproduce the issue. Also, even if it is a brand new drive, you would want to perform a quick health check on the drive.

Hi nobus, I am going to ask it in a different way. If you try to connect the USB stick to the same PC 10 times in a raw will it fail to recognize 5 times and will get recognized 5 times? Or will it fail only first time and then work 9 times ok?

By first connecting the external drive to a system it should be authorized and its guid written into registry. This is a trick of MS to avoid the initialization and authorization each time. Usually you can see these records in HKLM...partitions if I am not mistaken.
Seems in your case Windows did not finish this process correctly. Did you get the popup with scan request?

Seems in your case Windows did not finish this process correctly.   <-- I was thinking earlier that this stick was slow (which explains that), and then Windows completes it on the second try.

>>   Did you get the popup with scan request?    <<  no - only that the usb drive is not recognised message
as for the speed, i connected it today several times to different usb ports, and it openend each time  at once

Then Windows accepted it as “known” and it should work now ok.
Frankly speaking the only problems I’ve seen on usb drives were due file system issues of the partition on the drive.

it seems the systems were occupied with other things in the background   Probably and maybe the particular USB card is not as fast as others.  At the end, it is just the way it is (as I see it).
