Replace Microsoft Small Business Server 2008

zelfanet used Ask the Experts™

I am currently using a Microsoft Small Business server 2008 for an office with three people. They are only using the server for file sharing and dhcp. The dhcp can be handled by the firewall. What could I replace this ailing server with? It has to be something onsite as the internet connection is extremely slow...

Strictly speaking, they don't need a server.  If you move DHCP to the router, then you could use a NAS.  Or a Windows PC sharing data (windows 10 has a 20 user maximum.

If you want a server (PERSONALLY, I prefer having them.  It's a psychological thing...), then the Essentials version could make sense since there are no CALs needed and it's about 35-40% less expensive than a full server.  Of course, like SBS, you have to pay attention to the wizards or you could break it.  (I only have one client on essentials... and honestly, I prefer using a regular server license).

There are also some linux based solutions that will handle the minimal requirements you have. Some with no cost except an old PC with some hard drives in it. ClearOS and SME Server come to mind...
