Unbuntu SMB share and Windows 98 clients

Have Ubuntu 16.04 running as a VM.  Would like to utilize to allow *Windows 98 clients (yes I know Windows 98) to connect to share files.
Keep getting a IPC$ password prompt, but the password doesn't work.   This would be a completely segmented and closed network - no Internet.
Cannot get the clients to connect to the SMB share.

*The customer currently uses old cardmaking printers and software that only works with Windows 98.  A Novell server is still being used to share
files.  Want to replace the Novell fileserver before it dies.   Eventually, they will be replacing all the printers and software, but who knows when!

Won't it be easier to create an NFS share and install NSF client on Windows 98?
WebccAuthor Commented:
Not sure, would it?   So, I can search for how to setup on Ubuntu.  I'm guessing I will need a Win98 disc to install the Unix services.
Shaun VermaakTechnical SpecialistCommented:
It might. We use NFS on legacy devices when we disable SMB1

Any suggestions on install and configuration?

Windows 98 depends upon SMBv1 and short of removing security on your machines, you will not be able to connect.

Windows 98 supports USB.  Can you move data as needed by USB Key or USB hard drive?

In your samba.conf file what do you have for min protocol? max protocol?

No options for minimum or max so, it's using defaults which is probably SMBv3.  I can try to set and test again.  Also, I see there is a parameter for IPC signing in the documentation.

Also, does anyone know where I can download a malware free version of Win98 SE?
JohnBusiness Consultant (Owner)Commented:
You likely can get a genuine license on eBay. Work with the vendor to assure this or will take it back and refund your money
Also, does anyone know where I can download a malware free version of Win98 SE?

I'm pretty sure answering that question would violate EE's TOS
