How to check why I cant route from one specific VLAN to another (Cisco)

Packet can't flow between vlan 12 and 34 on cisco switch/router

I have a device on VLAN 12 (10.12.14.100), and it needs to communicate with a server on VLAN 34 (10.34.14.20).  A trace route to VLAN 34 from 12 gets to one hop on the gateway then stops.  How can I check why the router isn't routing to VLAN 34?

Thanks,

Show ip route
Show ip int brief
What model switch?
Show ip route
You might see ip routing not enabled
So enable it
  Ip routing
Show ip route should now show the connected intetfaves and the default route pm
We need to know the model router/switch. Also which technologies are used (are VRF's used for example) ? How many routers/switches are involved? Is it just Cisco ?

Please clarify these things (preferably with a drawing). Without this, it's guesswork (as seen in previous answers).
