how can I create a bootable USB flash drive with Windows 10 on it?

Hello and Good Evening Everyone,

            As an option of resolving an issue, I am seriously considering carrying out a wipe and reload of an HP Pavilion currently running Windows 8 which brings me to this upcoming question.   Is it possible that I can create a bootable USB flash drive with Windows 10 on it?  If so, could someone provide the necessary instructions for achieving this goal?

             Thank you so much.

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Hi George,

Do you mean Windows 10 installation media, or were you looking for the Windows 10 operating system that will boot from a USB? The latter is not possible.

To get installation media on a USB however, go here;

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Follow the instructions under "Create Windows 10 installation media"

If you have any follow up questions, please feel free to ask for more specific information.

I hope that's helpful.

Regards, Andrew

note that you will need the license key for windows 10
if it does not boot auto from the usb drive, set that drive in the boot options as first device.
you may also need to disable secure boot, if the system has an UEFI bios

If you want to run Windows 10 from USB (I doubt it, seems you want to install from USB) you can use Windows-to-Go if you have Windows 10 Enterprise or Windows 10 Education

As for installing from USB, Rufus is another option

You should be able to create a bootable USB from the Media Creation link posted above. When you install, it will required you to purchase the license key.
