How to download a Windows 10 driver for USB to DB9 serial connectivity using puTTY

I need to connect to a switch using a USB to DB9 connector, and using PuTTY.  What's the easiest way to download the drivers on my Windows 10 machine so PuTTY can work?  Thanks

I don't think you need any drivers for it to work, as long as your USB ports are recognized

The USB drivers are included in windows 10. Is your adapter made for Windows 10?

It's a USB-to-DB9 adapter.  I don't think there's anything OS-specific about the adapter?

Then it should work in your machine as drivers are already there.

In the past, using Windows 10, I've had to specify in PuTTY which com port the USB is recognized on, e.g. COM3

The driver for the USB to Serial adaptor will be one of three scenarios:

1. A "native" Windows 10 driver, installed along with Windows. USB-Serial adaptors are not cutting edge, they tend to use old chipsets, hence drivers have been around for ages, and most are included in Windows 10. This is the most common scenario.
2. A manufacturer provided driver might be required if this device is very new, or obscure and the manufacturers never submitted to Microsoft for inclusion in Windows, or was too flakey for Microsoft to allow to be distributed.  It might  be downloadable from the web, or included on a CD supplied with the device.
3. No driver exist. This is a bad scenario, where the manufacturer went broke before releasing drivers that work with your system. That would be very unlucky for a USB-Serial adaptor, but not impossible.

Your next step is to take a look in Device Manager. It should be easy to confirm there that a driver is loaded, and what the serial port is numbered. From within PuTTY, just specify that port number.

Thank you all - Andy, John and Mal.

Yes, the driver for the USB - to -Serial adapter seems to be included in Windows 10.

And the article was very helpful as well.
