How to change a directory and all its contents to Read Only?

I would like to change the old directory and its contents on the server to read only to prevent all users to modify it because I have already moved all contents to new location. I just want to change the old directory to read only in case some one would like to refer the old contents. May I know how can I do it?

Thanks for your prompt reply.

There are multiple groups can access to the same folder and its contents. Also, there are some sub-folders do not inherent the access from the folder above. It would be ideal if we can keep maintain all the permissions of the access groups but only change the folder and sub-folders to a mode similar to "READ ONLY" so that in case we need to fall back, those access groups can still access the contents like before.

I heard there is a distribution mode, I am not sure if this is a solution?
