You are aware that in just over 13 months, 2008 will not be supported anymore. &nbsp;No more security updates will start to put you at greater risk from things like ransomware and other malicious software. &nbsp;Further, once software is not supported, Microsoft will likely stop testing new patches and updates applied to more current operating systems. &nbsp;It becomes increasingly possible that a new Windows 10 update will suddenly cause it to stop working with Windows 2008 R2. &nbsp;<br />

Assuming this all sounds acceptable and you want to proceed, you need to verify that all your existing software on that 2008 R2 server supports being run on a domain controller. &nbsp;(I am assuming it is NOT currently a domain controller - if it is, this becomes a lot easier). &nbsp;And that it doesn't cause problems promoting it to a domain controller after it's been installed. &nbsp;Doing a trial run in a test environment can tell you this.<br />

Assuming you do have to promote it to a DC, I would encourage you to hire a pro or do this 2-3 times in a test environment FIRST because this is your network... failing to get this right the first time can disrupt 45 people for potentially hours or days. While I think this is a fairly simple process, I've had over 20 years of experience to know what to do and some things are just steps I may gloss over or forget others don't know this is critical.

 you may have already migrated roles to the SBS2011. If this is the case I would buy a NAS device and do away with the 2008 server. <br />

 Please clarify, if I understand you want the SBS2008 to be a stand alone server, correct? Meaning your SBS2011 is managing DNS, AD, DHCP, and all the roles to manage the domain?
