Hi,

I am looking into purchasing AWS dedicated hosts for licensing reasons. I am assuming that when the hardware running a Dedicated Host fails, all instance hosted on it also fail. Does anyone know what happens in this event?

Thanks,
Adrian

When a machine fails, all software running on the machine fails.

Whether your "machine" is running on physical hardware or in a VM (AWS) same holds true.

Machine death == All software running dies too.

I think they are more concerned about how fast Amazon repair/replace the host and return it to service.

andyalder makes a good point.

Typically Amazon is very fast about fixing problems like this, because when one VM fails, this usually means there's been a hardware failure, so many VMs + many sites go down together, so fixes occur quickly.

@andyalder, that's exactly what I mean. Normally if an instance dies, you can stop it and launch it on new hardware. What happens with a dedicated host? Does the entire host die, with all instances on it?

That information should be in the terms of service of your contract with Amazon, it is not much different from the hardware warranty you would get with a physical server under your desk. We warrant that when your server fails under guarantee that we will fix it some time next month sort of statement. If a dedicated host dies everything running on it dies of course. Some VMs may survive if it is just a DIMM failure.

Just like with instance degradation, AWS will notify you. All instances on the host will likely fail or show signs of degradation. You would have to stop and start the instances on another dedicated host or with default tenancy. Once all instances on a failed dedicated host have been stopped or terminated, AWS automatically retires the host.

You asked, "What happens with a dedicated host? Does the entire host die, with all instances on it?"

With dedicated physical servers, if the machine dies, all sites on the machine die with the machine.

This is why many people run LXD these days (what I do), with backup instances across several machines.
