The 4 in 1 reader, is designed so that it can support various formats of memory cards. When I said it depends on your use, that is because of the flexibility that this reader offers you. these devices are generally not added to machines to be used as &quot;&nbsp;full time removeable storage&quot; or &quot;Backup Devices&quot; they are generally added to machines so that you can retrieve information or media that you store to external devices such as Cameras, Cell Phones, or any other device that are not directly connected to your computer via a wireless NIC. The general accepted use is to store data temporarily to these cards in order to create a conduit to get the information to a computer. They are not made for an extreme number of read write cycles.<br />

If you are looking at utilizing this as a full time removable storage option, I would look elseware as there are ALOT of other options available to you with drastically reduced costs generally with better performance.

<h2>You can use them for backup.</h2>
SDCards are fine for longish term storage, if you're not constantly writing to them on an hourly basis. &nbsp;They work just fine for daily or weekly backups that don't completely fill the SDCard. &nbsp;As with typical backups, you should be pulling them offline and swapping them. &nbsp;They should last a few years, and you should be buying a new one every year or 1.5 years to upgrade the capacity and make sure you have new media before the oldest one fails. &nbsp;This goes for USB memory sticks too. &nbsp;If you use SSDs or HDs, you can double to triple the replacement period to 3-5 years. &nbsp;You should have at least 3 backup media for the rotation: 1 old one that is left as archive, and rotated out; 1 middle aged medium; 1 newest medium. &nbsp;When you get the next replacement, you destroy the archive, or save it for long term archive and rotate everything through. &nbsp;If you have a proper rotation schedule, you won't lose data.<br />

<h2>You can use them as linux server boot disks.</h2>
SD cards and USB Memory sticks and the 1st generation SSDs have relatively low life under heavy usage, so you shouldn't really use them as OS boot disks, especially if the OS includes swap. &nbsp;It's fine as a linux server boot when you don't put swap on it and you've configured it to fit in RAM. &nbsp;I've run a linux server for months with the boot disk drive disconnected after initial bootup, but you can't do this if you use it as a user OS, unless you're able to separate the user space onto another disk. &nbsp;Do not use them for OS X, as you'll have to do some tweaking to disable swap completely and move all user programs off the primary disk, which happens to be a lot of tweaking to get working correctly. &nbsp; While Windows swap can be turned off, Windows software still accesses the disk a lot and also requires some tweaking to move user software onto another disk.<br />

In cameras, they work just fine, as cameras aren't constantly writing to the media like modern OSes, so they're actually relatively low usage, even when you record video. &nbsp; Newer SATA SSD drives do last a while and, if you need them for heavy usage, you'll need the more expensive SLC memory chips of server SSDs, instead of the typical MLC and TLC chips.
