On starting up an VM installed in VMware workstation 15, I get the following error message User generated image. How do I resolve this?

XFS, eh?

You're a true thrillseeker.

Once you have this corrected, best to convert to ext4 for most stable filesystem.

https://forums.unraid.net/topic/66749-xfs-file-system-corruption-safest-way-to-fix/ provides good coverage for trying to fix this.

ASKER

David,

I'm not able to execute the command. I get to the grub> prompt . Any other suggestions?
This likely means you've made your kernel + base level OS commands are installed onto an XFS partition.

In the future, stick with ext4.

If I were faced with fixing this, I'd...

If you have a backup, reformat the disk as ext4 + install Ubuntu Bionic (5 year LTS) on fresh disk + restore your backup.

If you have no backup, then...

1) Remove the XFS disk.

2) Install a fresh disk.

3) Install Ubuntu Bionic (5 year LTS) onto your fresh disk.

4) Attach an external disk dock via USB 3.1 (or Thunderbolt if you have an interface card).

5) Attempt repairing the XFS disk while it lives as an external disk.

This approach allows you to boot your machine + use normal command line tools.

If you can't get past GRUB, then you can't really do any type of recovery, till you have your XFS disk attached to a bootable machine.
David,

"5) Attempt repairing the XFS disk while it lives as an external disk."

I will try this and post an update on the progress in a few days
