Grand Prize to anyone who can make Outlook 2016 sync with iPone through ITunes.

Win10/64 computer crashed recently. Had to reinstall Win and all the apps. Have Office 2016 and run Outlook. Everything else on redone machine works fine except I can no longer sync Outlook with iPhone 8. Don't want to use cloud for various and familiar reasons. Had been able to USB sync without problems. Now, nothing. I can see the iPhone in FileExplorer so I know the machine is recognizing it so USB driver for iphone must be fine. I have literally tried every suggestion of every forum where this issue is discussed.  Even though the devices recognize each other, clearly they are not "talking" to each other. Yes, I uninstalled ITunes from MS and installed iTunes from Apple. Same behavior. And there are many, many other suggestions, including one expert moderator who insists that Win10 (1803) is not supposed to sync with Outlook 2013. Sound like nonsense to me. There must be millions of business users who use Outlook 2016 and have an iPhone. I posted a similar query here and - to my surprise - found, essentially, links to other forums I'd read, mostly useless suggestions. I can't believe that one of the EE experts hasn't solved this problem, especially the sys admins who manage Outlook for their shops. Just to be a bit facetious, it seems like I have three choices - give up Outlook, which is heavily integrated in my work flow, buy a third party sync program such as CompanionLink or do what many of us so often want to do after three weeks trying to solve what appears to be a straightforward problem - throw the phone against the wall. I just want to create a simple device to device usb sync and void the many problems of iCloud on a PC. Hoping someone was equally frustrated and had the knowledge to solve this. Thanks for considering this.

Hi normanml,

Just to clarify, is your problem that you can't get the iPhone to show up in iTunes?

Just trying to decipher the root problem here.

Thank you,

Devin Becker
I do what you want routinely, almost daily.

Open iTunes. Is it properly installed?

Leave it open, connect the iPhone to the USB port.  You may need to unlock the phone. Does it show up?

Then if so, look in the iTunes Sync info and make sure you are syncing with Outlook. Default is iCloud. Switch that.

Please let us know
your mail account is obviously from somewhere on internet (in the could)

simply add your mail account in outlook 2016

it will synchronise with your mail, the same that are in your phone (also calendar etc.)

Choose imap for type of account

Procedure should be available at the web site of your mail provider

Thanks for the comments. Yes, i can "see" the IPhone in both iTunes and in file explorer. iTunes sync info offers only two choices as the source: Outlook and "Windows Contacts ." I do in fact have my email profile in Outlook and use it as my email client. (Perhaps I misunderstood the question.) And yes its an imap account (university uses Google mail as it's server). The suffix of the email address is @nyu.edu. And it works fine with iPhone's native email app.  When I run the iTunes sync it backs up the phone, says it's preparing to sync, reports that sync took place. But it never does. Or no longer does. It's almost as if iTunes can't get access to the databases in the phone.
iTunes sync info offers only two choices as the source: Outlook and "Windows Contacts .

I assume you chose Outlook.

Two more things:

1. Shut the iPhone OFF (power down), wait 2 minutes, start it up and wait a minute for it to start.
2. Hook it up and look in iTunes under the Phone and make sure it is trusted.
normanml,

Are you syncing or backing up the phone on iTunes? Or are you trying to sync the phones outlook mail and calendar with your computers outlook mail and calendar?

Sorry, just trying to get a grasp on what the problem is so we can better help resolve it for you.

Thank you,

Devin Becker
When Syncing, Backup occurs first and then it automatically turns to Syncing.
According to users reporting similar issues recently,

one possibility might be that your windows machine has a default Microsoft Store version" that was causing issues with syncing. They downloaded the version of outlook provided by their work and were able to sync email and calendars.

Source: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/msoffice_outlook-mso_imobile-mso_365hp/outlook-2016-itunes-not-syncing-solved/0ce68df3-99d8-43c7-a02c-bec78be916e4

Not sure if you have checked your computer for windows store apps, but it might be worth a check and reinstalling using a work provided outlook installer(as this user mentioned).

Hopefully this helps,

Devin Becker
Machine came with version from Microsoft store. I uninstalled that (manually to get everything). got a version from the Apple website and installed. Sync did not work with either version. Work sells a modified version of Office that does not include Outlook. I think the source mentioned in the link was the subscription version.
I using a subscription version of Office myself.
Sorry normanml,

I meant to clarify that I was talking about Outlook 2016 being installed via the windows store by default. I would recommend install outlook. not sure which one you meant by downloaded from Apple website... since it's a Microsoft product. I would try installing Outlook via the website using your office/microsoft account associated with your office/microsoft account.
Devin - I bought MS Office 2016 through the MS Store. Outlook, of course, was part of the suite. So I'm a bit confused about your suggestion. If you think Outlook is the culprit here, I'd have to uninstall/reinstall the Office suite. In all other respects, Outlook is working fine.

John-In my readings across the last several weeks, I think someone suggested switching to the subscription version, which, again from what I read, does not seem to have any problems with syncing Outlook/iPhone. Switching now makes no sense since I've got 2016 paid version. At all events, I can't imagine what the subscription version has or is set up in such a way that is different from the paid version.

The troubleshooting here is maddening. Is it ITunes or Outlook that is the culprit? Is it the version of iTunes (from MS Store or Apple Store - only difference, I read, is that MS version does not bug you to update).

I can do second level (intermediate) trouble shooting, and, just thinking logically, on my rig the two programs clearly are not "talking" to each other, even though both are running fine on their own, even though the phone shows up in FileExplorer, and so forth. I have the feeling there's something missing or something that needs to be toggled.
I don't think there is any difference with respect to iPhone Sync between Desktop Paid Office 2016 and Desktop Subscription 2016.

So long as Outlook is on the Desktop and has a PST file (POP3 or IMAP downloaded to PST) then iTunes set for Outlook (not Cloud) should sync.

I cannot verify Paid, but I can verify Subscription - works fine.

I'd have to uninstall/reinstall the Office suite.    <-- Try that, make sure patched, make sure iTunes sees the phone as trusted.
You're right, indeed, John. Found this on the MS Outlook forum. Makes no difference what version of Outlook you use. The problem:

"Only Outlook Exchange and Active Sync accounts are featured to sync Contact and Calendar, it is not possible to sync Contact and Calendar using Outlook IMAP account as it does not sync Contact and Calendar."

I still use the university for my email and it's an IMAP account using Google, essentially as its server. I could switch to POP, but then I can't access my email for anywhere, which is both extremely useful and very safe.

Called the university tech help. They have an app (plug-in) for Outlook that will allow syncing imap to Google apps. No workaround for Outlook.

Now someone here may weigh in saying they have an imap account and can easily sync with Outlook. If such is the case, I'd like to know how.

So unless there's an Outlook programmer lurking on EE, I reckon I'm headed to a 3rd party solution like CompanionLink.
Interesting. iTunes did NOT work on Windows 8, so actually I moved my stuff to Companion Link and synced that way. That, too, works fine as I know from experience using it.

I switched back to iTunes with the advent of Windows 10.
Are you using imap?

Thanks to all. Your questions prompted me to keep searching until I found the "imap" exception -- sounds like a movie title. Again thanks.

PS 1/20/2019: Did two things. When I went to uninstall office to reinstall office I found no entries in programs and features. The program was on the computer, just in a version that does not list it. At all events, after some reading, I downloaded Office 2016 paid version and, as if repairing my installation, I simply installed in on top of whatever was on my machine. Now it was listed. Outlook worked fine.

Then I read that the safest way to use imap in outlook is to create a pst for contacts and calendars. Which I did and made it the default data source. The ost file handles the account.

Seems ITunes sync was looking - or does look - for a pst file when it's told to sync. Now I can sync okay. NB: I bought and installed Companion Link as a backup sync. Worth the money.
You are most welcome and I was happy to work with you. Like you, my iPhone is critical to daily work
