When moving photos from c:\users\username\photos to e:\photos, they are all gone now.
Windows 10 photos are gone after I attempted to move the folder where the photos are located from c:\Users\<username>\Photos to a USB drive 256GB module E:\Photos. When I did this, all of the photos on the c: drive disappeared even though it said it was going to move them.
ASKER
Correct, the only option was move. There wasn't a copy option. The E: drive is still connected yes. The pictures didn't move over. The folder just went blank.
They were originally in C;\users\username\pictures
ASKER
Yes, then I tried the location tab, typed in the new directory on E:\Photos and it asked me if I wanted to move everything over to the new directory, I said yes, and then once it finished moving photos to E: the images didn't move over. THe folder was blank.
ASKER
Yes this was the process. I didn't see any errors, it just moved the Photos folder but the images were all gone when I moved it.
I tried moving the folder back to c:\users\<username>\Photos and they are still gone. Simply weird. I'll have to try to get them back

Have you looked in the Recycle bin?
Have you done a search for any of the files?

Trying to get connected to the system remotely. It didn't indicate the files were deleting. I'll look for jpegs when I get reconnected to the system. Will update you when I get reconnected.
If they are very important images, turn off the remote system and attach the harddrive to another system, and use some software to attempt to retrieve the deleted file. I like Get-data-back I have used it for years.
There are also a multitude of boot images out there that have file recovery software. A very important part is to get that system turned off asap.

check your usb drive for the photo's.
if you know the name of one pic, you can search for it, or for the extension.
it is possible it moved the pics to a different folder, if you did not keep the mouse pressed lo,ng enough
*** i never use move, Always use copy, just for that problem

I believe you accidentally moved to a different folder, even on the same drive. I suggest you do a search for these file on all drives

Basic thoughts:
is the USB disk still connected. are they on there anywhere?
Have you tried searching for files to see if they have just gone somewhere unexpected?
Have you checked eventvwr around the time it occurred to see if any errors were logged that may help explain the issue?
Did you have any kind of backup of the files/folders you could use?
Did the E:\photos already exist and did the user have permissions to create folders/move files there?
If you're struggling try checking where windows thinks the folder should be:
Regedit: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software \Microsoft \Windows\C urrentVers ion\Explor er\User Shell Folders
There should be a key for 'My Pictures' which advises where they should be. The default is usually %USERPROFILE%\Pictures
This may point you in the right direction if you're lucky.

I logged back in and will be going onsite in about 2 - 3 hours.
I checked for jpeg photos and .jpg and they weren't listed.
I'll see what I can find when I grab the computer

ok; are you SURE the pictures are in jpg format? users needing pictures to be treaded professionally can use other formats.

I went into the Photos App, they are all there. It seems that the customer unpinned the photos app and mistook that for the photos being gone. I moved one drive to a USB drive and brought the laptop back to the Client
I will know in the morning if this is resolved

it was to be expected it would be something like that; that's why i was suggesting to check the drive for jpg
