2016 o/s updates/patching alternatives to WSUS or SCCM!

Hello Everyone and thanks in advance for your insights.
We just deployed our first 2016 servers and I realized that patching/updates is going to be a challenge as we can obviously not create the same granular control (which patches and when) we had with previous server level o/s installs. WSUS is a nightmare and SCCM is too complex and overkill in our relatively small environment of less than 30 servers. Does anyone use anything other than SCCM/WSUS to query and update their servers. We have 2008R2, 2012R2 and now 2016 servers. Appreciate any and all input. Application solutions should be relatively easy to learn and manage, as well as not cost a zillion $ of course. LOL!
Cheers :-)

And what would you want to see improved as compared to WSUS? What in particular are you unable to do with WSUS alone?

Not an issue in terms of what I cannot do with WSUS, but we are limited in terms of tech staff available and I found WSUS sophisticated (more than we need) and very time intensive in terms of making it and keeping it functional the last time I used it for desktops mid 2018. So just looking for a slightly easier solution.

wow scripts would make it even more complex as we do not use them normally... like I said we are very small... thanks for the input thus far :-)
Ok, scripting is not for everyone.
But after all, I know an alternative: http://www.wsusoffline.net/docs/
I agree with McKnife on this one. WSUS is free and easy. There are paid for products out there (like SCCM) but all are abiutut more flexibility and power.... Which comes with more complexity, not less.

If WSUS is too complicated then your other choice is patch manually. I can't think of a better alternative. But then again, I don't think WSUS is complex. At all. Even a little.
Thanks everyone will go back and revisit WSUS
