asked on

can the charging port of an iPhone 5 and iPhone 6 be used as a data port?

Hello and Good Afternoon Everyone,

I am wondering if the charging port of an iPhone 5 and iPhone 6 can be used as a data port.  The reason I ask is that I wish to transfer or backup data stored on the iPhone 5 to my laptop and transfer it to the iPhone 6 when it arrives.  The charging port is the only USB like port I see on it, which I am assuming is micro-USB because it is too small to be a standard USB port.  That said, I believe I will need a micro-USB to standard USB cable.  My USB ports on this laptop are 2.0 and not 3.0.

       Thank you

       George

If you are using the original sync and charging cable which comes with your iPhone, the cable is to both the purposes of charging and data sync with a computer.

If you are just doing an upgrade of iPhone 5 to iPhone 6, make a full non-encypyed backup of iPhone 5 to your computer via iTunes and when you setup your iPhone 6, select to restore the backup, and not as a new iPhone.

This port, on ALL iPhones regardless of model, is used for both charging and data. The cord that came with the iPhone (use only that) plugs into the phone and the other end is USB and this attaches to anything the phone can do.  iTunes is the best application for it. I use that for all iPhone needs including Outlook syncing.

No iPhone I know of any more attaches to Windows Explorer. Gone.  Apple made IOS to use iCloud.

As already stated. The same one that is used to charge an iPhone with.

"Best" is a very subjective term. iTunes works, but has (in my view) a clumsy interface and does not support direct transfer from Phone to PC or PC to Phone, insisting on uploading data to an Apple Cloud server and then re-downloading it back down again. Unnecessary as there are better solutions available which have been proven to work as well or even better.

According to who? Apple's little bubble? There is a multitude of alternate solutions being enjoyed by millions of users around the world who are not restricted by what Apple says should only be done with iTunes and their cloud server. Apple may want a monopoly, but that doesn't mean they shall have one.
Hmmm.   It worked all the time. It was removed in IOS 11 thereabouts. We all complained.

I see now it is BACK.  Great news.  Apparently Apple did listen. It came back in one of the IOS 12 updates.  Thanks.

Just as an adjunct:
If you are registered with iCloud, by going into settings on your iPhone 5 and tapping on your name at the top, and selecting iCloud, if all the switches are on, your iPhone will be backed up completely to iCloud. When you get your new iPhone, as part of the setup, when you input your iCloud account details and password, it will automatically setup your new iPhone with all the data from iCloud without the need of connecting to iTunes.
