Does anyone have experience with or know a good way to backup virtual machines running on VMWare? But it is a requirement that there be open source software. Partly because I am on a tight budget, but also in principle because I think there is very good open source software in general.  It is also a requirement that it should run on Linux as I do not have a single Windows machine.

data is not stored on virtual machines the data is stored on the server. Why would you need to back up data on a vm?

My setup is that I have a VMWare cluster running with just over 20 virtual machines. In general, I use Ansible to configure my machines. I am just trying to find the best way to get my machines back online as soon as possible if something goes wrong (and that will at some point - Murphy's Law still applies). But is backup a wrong way to tackle the problem?

The question is no longer relevant as I have decided to drop VMWare in favor of a Kubernetes/Docker solution.
