Change IQN on esxi 6.5

How do I update the IQN names on esxi 6.5?  I updated the name under storage adapters and tried via esxcli, but a reboot appears to revert my changes.  Any thoughts?

It's not really supported, but you can directly edit the esx.conf (from the bash prompt).

I looked at the file and the iqn name is correct which tells me that a reboot reverts it.  Could there be another location to update it?

[root@server:/etc/vmware] cat esx.conf | grep cisco:

Could i create a new vmhba adapter with the correct information then delete the old one?  I'm unsure if that would crash my host (which would be in maintenance mode if i attempted it).
remember there are two partitions on the ESXi installation.

is this installation on a flash drive ?
How do I access the other partition?  This is booting from iscsi off a netapp.
Yes
