Distribution Groups - Exchange Cross Forest Migration

Hello Experts,

i am during a Cross Forest Migration from Exchange 2013 to Exchange 2016.
I did it with prepare-moverequest script and migrated round about 50 Percent of the Users.
So i have still old mailboxes on the source exchange and migrated mailboxes on the target exchange.

Now i have a Question regarding the Mailgroups.
I have 30 Mailgroups on the old exchange server. How can i migrate them to the new server.
I Think the easiest way is just to create the Distribution Groups on the new server and give them the same mail adress.
Then putting the members to the group. migrated mailboxes and prepared mailuser from script when still not migrated.

Is there maybe a more preferable way to do it? Do i need to migrate the exchange attributes and why?

best regards,
Lukas

Commented:
For distribution groups, you can use ADMT tool which can migrate groups from source to target along with group members without exchange attributes as ADMT won't migrate exchange attributes
Then simply mail enabled them through exchange management console / eac

Further you have only 30 groups, if ADMT is already not setup, you can do manually as you stated already

Commented:
1. ADMT migrate the user accounts and group objects.
2. Prepare-MoveRequest.ps1 with OverwriteLocalObject to grab the Exchange properties from the source so now all user objects to be migrated are MailUsers in destination Exchange.
3. Make PS script to export contacts (and their group membership) from source Exchange.
4. Recreate contacts in target with PS Script, add X500 address of the LegacyExchangeDN attribute.
5. Export all distribution groups & mail properties (don't forget the LegacyExchangeDN!) with PS Script from source.
6. Mail-enable distribution groups in target, import all email addresses and LegacyExchangeDN as X500 address with PS Script.
7. Start doing Remote Mailbox moves and Outlook will automatically update.
8. ADMT will keep the group membership as they are "today", but won't mail enable them. As long as they don't change too often, this should work fairly well. All emails will go to the individual members from either side.
