Does "Vanilla Javascript" mean NO jQuery?

And, does jQuery allow me to not use some of these direct calls, like to the document model?

Thanks

Normally yes.

You can use jQuery and plain Javascript in the same document.  jQuery IS javascript, it is just a library with a lot of predefined functions.
