Any tracking devices out there for laptops in the event of a theft?

Hi guys

I've installed an anti-theft application on my laptop, in case some thieves break into my home and take it (there's been burglaries in the area). I'm trying to think further down the line. The issue I have with these applications is that if someone takes my laptop, they may be cunning enough to take out the disk inside at which point, I can kiss goodbye the anti-theft application I installed.

Are there any tracking devices out there that I could plant into my laptop, to locate it in the event of an unfortunate event?

Thanks for helping
Yashy

Most likely however you'd be better off purchasing a laptop with Absolute's Persistence / Computrace Lojack.

Giovannia, thank you for this.

So is the Absolute Persistence, just software? It ends up going into bios? So no physical installation of anything is needed?
It's a feature in BIOS supported by compatible hardware, that also has a software component.  Tracking can take place even if the BIOS is flashed, hard drive erased, OS reinstalled, etc.

Built into the BIOS or firmware during the manufacturing process of most major device manufacturers, we are able to provide our customers with the only security solution that can withstand a factory reset, installation of a new OS, or even a complete hard drive replacement. But the device has to be plugged into the network in order for you to detect that it is online. When you pay for the service they do the tracking for you, once they detect that the system is online they can locate it, and you or they can then contact your local police to get them involved in recovering the laptop.

Web_tracker - is there any worry of those applications being capable of having backdoors open to the hackers out there and for spying on my content?

That's not what the software is designed to do it is there to track the location of the item not to log your keystrokes or spying on you.
