android update nag

Is there a way to stop the constant android nag to upgrade to a later version of OS, im using ver 6 and happy with it, i read somewhere that enabling developer mode would help in this respect, so far i just keep postponing the update, but will it eventually force the update?

No it won't enforce an update It's reminding you not just because of improvement in function but also because your Android device is increasing less secure leaving the older OS running. Ultimately it's the users call when or if to install.  Developer mode may stop the nag but further drops your protection against malicious code as it gives additional access the the system kernel.
You should not be running Android 6. Currently there are several known hacks.

https://thehackernews.com/2017/05/android-hacking-technique.html is only one example.

Upgrade now, to avoid having your device hacked.
It does not matter: Apple IOS, Android OS, MAC OS, Linus OS, or Windows. Not upgrading is a very bad practice which well may compromise the security of your machine.

Update the OS and move on.
The world is full of bots running on peoples systems that refused to update. Don't be one of these
