Hi, I have a digital certificate that I use to encrypt, sign and open encrpted emails from trusted sources such as my DOD customers. I have had no problems for the last couple of years. I have upgraded from Outlook 2010 to Outlook 2016 and I can no longer open encrypted emails. I get a message stating: <br />

Sorry, we're having trouble opening this item. This could be temporary, but if you see it again you might want to restart Outlook. Your digital ID name cannot be found by the underlying security system.<br />

I have verified my cert is installed and I also made sure that the senders cert was installed in their contact. Any help with this would be appreciated.<br />

Since Upgrade to Outlook 2016 I Can No Longer Open Encrypted Emails

Encryption is the process of encoding messages or information in such a way that only authorized parties can read it. In an encryption scheme, the intended communication information or message, referred to as plaintext, is encrypted using an encryption algorithm, generating ciphertext that can only be read if decrypted. For technical reasons, an encryption scheme usually uses a pseudo-random encryption key generated by an algorithm. An authorized recipient can easily decrypt the message with the key provided by the originator to recipients, but not to unauthorized interceptors.

Microsoft Outlook is a personal information manager from Microsoft, available as a part of the Microsoft Office suite. Although often used mainly as an email application, it also includes a calendar, task manager, contact manager, note-taker, journal, and web browser.

Security is the protection of information systems from theft or damage to the hardware, the software, and the information on them, as well as from disruption or misdirection of the services they provide. The main goal of security is protecting assets, and an asset is anything of value and worthy of protection.  Information Security is a discipline of protecting information assets from threats through safeguards to achieve the objectives of confidentiality, integrity, and availability or CIA for short. On the other hand, disclosure, alteration, and disruption (DAD) compromise the security objectives.
