System generating 0kb documents

Environment:  Windows 2012R2, and W2016; auto updates.  Business Application hasn't been updated in 4months. - happening on more than one site.
Tsplus is the RDP server application.

Problem:  Time of problem varies from site to site 3wks to 1 yr,  Application generates .pdf documents; e.g. invoices, quotes, statements either singularly or in a batch process, current fault happens in all pdf generated process'.
A Process, e.g. Invoices runs; create a 0kb .pdf, no errors displayed, then emails the .pdf to the customer; usually only found when the email receipient of the .pdf says can't open it.
Tried removing all .tmp files,    appdata\local\temp & appdata\roaming\"any rdp session files not deleted".
Stop Print Spooler / Remove any files in windows\system32\spool\printer\*.* / Start print spooler.
Sometimes allows the correct generation pf the .pdf file; occassionally works - mostly not.
If user logs out of the Application and RDP Session, (back to the PC desktop) login to Server via RDP then application and perform the print - works everytime.

My summation but can't grasp the answer, is: Logging out of the Session obviously terminates a process that is affecting the "Printing"

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to identify the process &  recitification.

Thank you for reading this.

it certainly seems a likely possibility. Do you know if the application is supported in a TSPlus deployment?? Have you logged this issue with the provider?

Not much info here to make specific diagnosis but worth checking your event viewer for any evidence of errors or services stopping/crashing.
Alternatively, take a look at running processes before logging off and compare it to after logging back on to see if any may have hung.

Hi Steve,
Tks for the feedback.
Application has run faultlessly on Tsplus for about 7 yrs; no changes to app. prior to problem occurring.
TSplus comment : AV have been know to have an effect on "processing"; not the issue as one particular server has no AV.
Last look at logs didnt highlight any process' / failures, but will keep monitoring.
Good clue: checking running process' - sysinternals promon, should.
Thank you, I'll come back when I have more.

That doesn't mean its supported or designed to though.
Windows updates, TSplus updates and general changes to your systems can occur anytime. These can all have effects on applications, particularly where they are not designed/tested in your circumstances.

lack of errors/events certainly suggests there isnt a service crashing or anything like that. I'd lean towards something hanging with what little we know at the moment.

Thank you, I'll come back when I have more.
Good luck. let us know if you find anything.
Have asked users to immediately stop processing; when they can identify the PDF generation isn't going to work; the application is optionally set to display the generated document, then it moves on to create the PDF file based on the displayed data, e.g. Invoices, quotes.
As Steve has suggested; at that point can check for hung services / app. modules.
Have rebuilt user profiles. Didnt fix the issue.
Tsplus had suggested that they have seen it rarely, with an AV taking over. Using AVG & Webroot on different server. Nope 2 Svrs no AV, same issue.
Tks for hanging in there.

Yea, makes sense. Your only option may be to catch it in the act and do some quick diagnosis.
If you catch it may be worth checking which 'session' the print driver runs under. I recall some issues with recent versions of windows server which intentionally separates background process from user/GUI ones. The driver may be trying to display a popup or something like that, but no-users can see it!
There appeared to be a number of underlying problems with this machine, it became randomly flakely. Despite running extra AV and Trojan searchs and rootkit searchs nothing fixed it, decision was made to rebuild the Server and update the OS to 2019 and rebuild all applications and software.

Many thanks Steve for you suggestions

Regards
Terry
