On a Mac, trying to open/run a document should open the app first, and then load that document, assuming it exists.  Have you tried that?
(Disclaimer: I have never used Shortcodes!)

Sorry what I meant to say was shortcut. I want to use a keyboard shortcut to open up a specific Excel file. Is that possible?

Commented:
I wondered about that.

Have a look at this tutorial, it might help. https://etc.usf.edu/techease/4all/input-devices/how-do-i-create-a-keyboard-shortcut-in-mac-os-x/

Note that the tutorial is a bit old so, and until recently (I assume) it worked this way:

Open System Preferences and select Keyboard
Click on the Shortcuts TAB
Then Select form the left column, App Shortcuts
Press the + sign to create a new one.

But at this point, they now only let you create a shortcut to an application. You used to be able to select a document of that application.

I need to dig more.

OK, i found a $6.50 app that will let you create a keyboard shortcut to anything, called Better Touch Tool

https://folivora.ai

You can download a trial. It does require that the tool have accessibility privileges, so that may be a consideration.
I just tried their 45 day trial, and you can create macros, shortcuts, and open files.
For example, I create Control-Space to open my Quicken  file, and it worked great.
Just be careful not to overwrite an existing quick key of the system.

Okay so buying that app will allow me to open a specific Excel file, not just the Excel application but a certain xls file I always want to open each day using a shortcut, is that correct?

Commented:
Yes. You can download it and try it for 45 days for free to test it out. I suggest you give it a try. In my test, I created a Quickkey to open my Quicken file.  Just be sure to use a unique Quick key and not something already used by the system.

Then you will know if it will do what you need. I will probably buy it for $66.95

Okay I downloaded it and am looking at it now. I'm in the Keyword tab and want to use a shortcut sequence to open a specific xls file. What would I select under Trigger Predefined Action?

Commented:
I did this by simply having the key exchage open the file in question. As such:

It will ask for a file or program name, just use the file browser to find your document.
