Network Motioning and Management Tool Recommendation

Medium Priority
Last Modified: 2019-06-05
We are looking for a network monitoring and configuration management tool. More than 90% of our network is HPE (Prourve)/Aruba, and we use Infoblox IPAM.

The options we are looking at currently are HPE IMC, Infoblox NetMRI and SolarWinds.

At the moment cost has priority over nice to have features, so cut down versions of the above would also be one way to go. We have bout 600 switches and growing.

What we absolutely need in terms of features:

device inventory
device state  - basically being able to see if a switch is down
switch configuration backup as a scheduled task

Provided the above is covered, it would be nice to have:

network map with L3/L2 overlays
loop detection
device configuration compliance (to a set of policies and/or predefined baseline configuration)
device configuration comparison (side by side)
device configuration deployment
firmware inventory
firmware installation

Anything else that would be useful that you can recommend?

Thank you!

Thank you for this, it looks like an option. Clearly we ill need more than the 100 sensors in the free version, but it is an option.

Any views on the other 3 tools I listed?

I have tested SolarWinds but not the others.
Its a good tool too.
I did not go deep.

I would revisit SolarWinds IPAM and NPM as they also have free modules for Netflow, VMWare and others that you can add on for free to reduce costs.

Also, Solar Winds is FIPS-140 compliant  and meets the requirements.

I'd go with Solarwinds if pricing is your primary concern.  NCM, IPAM, NPM, TopMan

This will get you everything in your list (and then some) with 2 exceptions:

1. firmware installation
2. loop detection

The first, I'd make a vendor prove that they can consistently perform before I bought them for that function.

On the second, take a look at a subscription to thousand eyes.  Think you'll find it helpful.

So here's the stick.  I'm not a huge fan of Solarwinds, especially as the environment grows but..... for the functionality you are looking for, they'll generally be the cheapest player.  Additionally, (I think this has already been brought up) they have other capabilities that you may find useful moving forward.  Just be sure to build the architecture right the first time.  I've had to rebuild several environments and its always a headache after the fact.
