How can I back up on external drive?

I have Dell PC running windows 10. I use the windows back up and restore software for backing up on external drive. But this has not been upgraded since Windows 7.

Now I have updated Windows 10 I can no long get the back up to work. I need to find a different way now that Microsoft do not provide technical support on this.  Any ideas please for continuing to be able to back up on the external drive?

Thanks

Have a look at the following article from MS

That is how I did it but it has stopped working following installing updates. Is there a way to undo the problem?  When doing the backup it fails and there is a message that the disk is write protected .
Another possibility that is very flexible is Sync Back Pro (2brightsparks.com) .  You can set it to schedule and back up the particular folders and files you wish.  I use this.

John
Is Sync Back Pro software for allowing back up on external disk or a back up in cloud? I am using Carbonite but I still want a further backup on the external drive including a disk image which is a great facility for restoring.

Thanks Suhaib that is more like what I am looking for. Let me check it out . Does it back up files as well like I was doing?
It certainly allows backup to an external drive.  you would need a secure connection to backup in the cloud. I have only used this software for external or attached drives.

Thanks John. Does it do system image?
No. Sync Back Pro is File and Folder backup and synchronization. It is not backup image software.

You need the solution above (Macrium) or something like Acronis.
Hi midan
yes Macrium can do files and folders backup.
There other tool which do system backup and they are free: Paragon Backup & Recovery Free for example: https://www.paragon-software.com/free/br-free/
Install it configure a system image creation to usb drive and let it either run immediately or on schedule.

What is the tool that comes closest to replicating the windows backup and restore? I will miss it.
Backup & Recovery Free which I gave the link to. It uses also pvhd format which can be also mounted in Windows.
i also use paragon software; there are several other free tools too if you need them
