If it helps the only time I've heard these terms in context was in (1) code promotion conversations where DDL would be deployed during maintenance windows, and DML would be deployed during major code releases, (2) assigning priveleges where users get SELECT only and maybe stored procedure execution (i.e. DML) and advanced users also get DDL, and (3) evil Microsoft certification exam questions where they love to throw acronyms in the multiple choice answers.
