O365 Mail Domain Verify

mikeagonistes used Ask the Experts™
We're setting up a new O365 tenant, migrating an existing email domain to O365.

To pre-stage accounts, we need to verify ownership of the domain.

Can we verify ownership of domain with TXT file or code for O365 but leave the MX record in place with the current DNS provider?  That way, we can add accounts ahead of time but leave mail uninterrupted until we are ready to change MX over?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, you can. Do note that you still need to configure it as accepted domain for Exchange, by selecting the corresponding option when prompted, otherwise you will not be able to configure email addresses associated with it. However, there is no need to change the MX record until you are ready to do so.

Are you asking whether you can verify domain ownership using a file that is submitted to Microsoft, and not use DNS verification? I just want to make sure because it isn't quite clear what you mean, and I don't want to jump to conclusions.

Thanks, Vasil!  That was just the guidance for which I was looking!
