Totaling Numbers in Word 2010

How do I total a column of numbers in a Word 2010 that are not in a table?  Is this math feature possible?

the only way is to create a table out of the numbers and then apply a formula to that table.

You can also make the table in Excel and link to it in Word. The files need to be on the same computer or server. Both ways work.
