LSI HBA can see IBM storage, PERCs cannot

We have four Dell servers of various models and year.  Two of the Dells have LIS2008 HBS cards in them and the other two have Dell PERCH810 cards.

For storage, we have a Dell MD3200 and an IBM V3700 (don't laugh...I didn't pick the IBM).

Interesting thing is, when I connect the two LSI2008 HBA cards to the IBM and the Dell storage, those two cards CAN see the storage on both devices and access it.

The two Dell PERC cards can of course see the Dell storage, but CANNOT see anything in the IBM except the controller.

So, I've confirmed that the LSI2008 HBS cards CAN see both storage arrays but the PERCs cannot see beyond the IBM controller.

Can anyone give me some feedback on why this is?

I need all four servers to see both the Dell and the IBM storage and I'm about to buy two LSI cards but want a second opinion before I do.

Thanks

The IBM probably needs to have the controller software set up to allow the SAS IDs for each HBA path access and then the individual LUNs set up to allow those SAS IDs access.

But the LSI cards can see the IBM storage already, without any changes.

The LSI cards are HBA mode (IT Mode) only while the PERC are RAID?

After doing a bit of a search there are two RJ45 ports on the back of each controller. There may still need to be some settings changes done in the v3700 to allow the storage to be seen by the RAID controller versus the straight SAS HBA.

Do disks show up in Disk Manager when the LSI cards are used? Is there one or two HBAs per server?

HHmmm...there are two ports on each card.  I'm not sure about how each card is configured.  I'll check the 3700 and see if there are any settings in there that I'm missing.  This is a good lead though...thank you.  I'll let you know.

Odd that the PERC H810 sees the Dell storage, it's not a supported option and it's not meant to work. Maybe it's in HBA mode.

Both storage units have RAID controllers in them, they should only be used with HBAs, not RAID controllers, RAID controllers can normally only see LUN0, even some HBAs can only see LUN0 meaning they are OK to attach to individual disks but not to SAS based SANs.

You can tell if the PERC is in HBA mode vis https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l41rhE79vqU But it's still meant for a JBOD of disks, not LUNs out of a RAID based storage box.
