Installing MacOS on a new HDD - External USB drive VS Internet recovery

Hi - I am about to replace the HDD of a client Macbook mid 2012 with an SSD drive after the former had failed.
Is there a way that i can install High Sierra or Sierra on the new drive straight from an external USB disk instead of going through the Internet recovery?
Otherwise it means it will install Mountain Lion and then i have to re-upgrade again which is a waste of time i would like to avoid if poss.

I know how to get to download the macOS from the Itunes store - thats not my issue. I wanted to know whether i can install it onto a virgin drive via an external drive onto a macbook pro 2012 or do i have to go through the whole Internet recovery sequence....

You need to put the new SSD into the macbook first. Then, start your macbook with the USB installer for OS X to install the OS to the SSD.
