looking for a cisco switch, 48 ports, all 10G on each port, fiber and another switch with 40G on every port

Any recommendations for a cisco switch, IOS, 48 port, fiber on all ports, 10G on each port, and also, another switch with 40G on every port as well.

Your challenge is going to be the IOS requirement.

On the 10G side you will be tied to 40 ports of 10G on the 4500X.  As Pete points out above, you can get the 48 ports of 10G but you will need to go to NX-OS.  He and I differ in that as a general rule, I prefer the 9K line over the 3K.

For the 40G, you are going to have the same problem.  You can get 32 40G ports on the 9500 but to get the full 48 ports you are going to have to go to the Nexus platform or a chassis.  Again, I lean toward the 9K platform and you are going to be dealing with more than 1U out of the gate.

Hi guys, this is what I came up with, trying to stick with IOS.  I was just trying to figure out what the difference between the two are.

10G fiber on every port, using IOS
WS-C3850-48XS-S
WS-C3850-48XS-F-S

32 port, 40G on all ports, using qsfp+, using IOS
C9500-32QC-E

I think these are my only options trying to stick to IOS, right?
Forgot about the 3850.  Yes, those would be your IOS options.  One note on the 3850, you are going to want to monitor utilization as the ASICs are shared and these work best in bursty environments.  If you are at sustained high cap, the switch will suffer performance issues.

good to know, so are you suggesting a different model, if yes, which one?
If IOS is the primary factor then you're kind of stuck. If you are willing to go for the capability at the expense of learning a little something new then go for the nexus platform. It is different. Ill concede that. But.  I will also counter that the learning curve is lowered for what I'm betting you would use it for.  Nexus can be way different and lots to learn when you really start digging in but on the basic side it's fairly straightforward.  In short. If you're looking at the 10 and 40 gig as a real need then cover your tech side and stretch a little. You'll be happier in the long run.

so which nexxus specifcally?
I would look at the 9K - 9300 series specifically the 9300 series.  You can get the 48x10G in the 93180 or the 93108 depending on media.  For your 40G, you can get 36, 64 or 72 ports in the 9200 series.  To Pete's point above, you can also look at the Nexus 3K but you are going to run into the same issue on the 40G (nothing with exactly 48 ports of 48G).
