Problem with receiving invitations from calendars in Outlook - the invitations look like source code or diagnostic info instead of normal content.

Hello,

We've got a problem with receiving a calendar invitation in Outlook on one of our client's computer. The invitations come looking like diagnostic or source with headers. It doesn't matter if it's an invitation from O365 calendar or Google calendar. This is the IMAP account from 1.com and he uses Outlook 2019. Can anyone tell me what could cause the problem?
Below is the example email.
Kind regards,
Tom

Not entirely sure I understand the query. Could you clarify if the messages are being sent frm Outlook to somewhere else or received into Outlook?
Could you clarify source/dest applications?

As a generic answer, some facilities cant process Outlook calendar requests so you can amend outlook to use a generic ical format. Worth a try:

Sorry for the delay

The issue is that when Calendar invitation comes to Outlook on that specific workstation (it works fine on the other one with the same version of Windows 10 and Office) it shows diagnostic information, but at the same time a little pop up comes up saying that there is no default email client installed or configured: "There is no email program associated to perform the requested action.  Please install an email program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel."
We found a forum suggesting that Outlook for some reason cannot set itself as default and some people installed Mozilla Thunderbird, set it as default and then set Outlook as default successfully. That didn't work for us. We also repaired Office by using Online Repair few times now.

We have Office 365 subscription so Office software is installed through click-to-run because installing it through offline installer is quite cumbersome (it is not just offline installer) and I am not sure that it is worth going that avenue.

ah, thats a different issue. You mean the calendar item is being received as a file/attachment and doesn't open properly?

Whats the format? e.g .ical .ics .ifb .icalendar?

It is standard Outlook calendar item whether using Outlook with Exchange or with Gmail and sending to Outlook which is using IMAP account

whats the file extension?

Author

Commented:
I don't know. The same one which Exchange or Gmail generates.

Anyway, upon googling the issue we found out that the issue is with Outlook not being able to set itself as default email client for all email client subcategories. The solution there was to use Mozilla Thunderbird to take over the email defaults and then for Outlook to take it back.
We are working on it but my customer is on holiday so can't fully implement the above solution.
SteveArchitect/Designer

Commented:
yea, thats wat I was thinking. The underlying Widows doesnt know what to open that particular file with.
if you know the filetype we can fix that specific one instead of effectively doing a blanket fix on them all, but the end result is the same as long as Windows knows to use Outlook for that filetype.

Author

Commented:
I tried fixing it for .ics as this is the calendar invitation we are getting. Went through default apps and default file types and the right click and open with but still the same issue. I also did some registry key permission trick somebody suggested but it didn't work.
People reported running the whole Office removal tool and then installing but I have to wait for the customer to come back.

hate to admit it but yea, if repair densest work some do suggest that a removal and reinstall should fix oddities like this.

It is working now.

We followed the Thunderbird method:
* Install Thunderbird and set it as default
Restart
* Remove Office using Microsoft Office Removal Tool
Restart
* Create a text file on desktop and change the extension to ics and then right click > Open With > Choose Default App > and find Thunderbird
Restart
* Install the latest version of Office and make it default if it didn't do it it automatically (does tell you during first opening of Outlook and also in Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Email)
We didn't even create new profile in Outlook.
