SharePoint Online Slowness

I have a general question about people actively using Microsoft SharePoint Online for their Mid – Large Size Company Intranet sites.

We are currently on a 2010 on-premise environment and have an acceptable load time for our Intranet pages.  We have build a whole new Intranet site using Microsoft SharePoint Online in the O365 platform and have been experiencing much longer page load times.  To get the obvious questions out of the way, we have reviewed page weight, optimized all of our large queries, and are even using a CDN.  We can’t seem to get a page load time below 5 seconds.  Bandwidth going in/out of our company isn’t really an issue either, but of course, it could always be faster I’m sure.

Is this a common problem that everyone is dealing with, or should we be able to have faster load times than this?  Any tips to anything any of you have done to speed things up?

Have you tested the page load time with a PC that is not controlled by the company IT infrastructure and on a more unrestricted Internet connection?  We have seen problems when users are accessing Share Point content when behind a firewall doing geo-blocking.  The pages load eventually after the browser is finally feed data from a server that is not being geo-blocked.

Thank you for your suggestions.  I recall I used to be able to split points, but don't see that option now.  Had to just pick one of you.
