Server configuration - Esxi
Hi I am very new to virtualization especially on hardware front.
I have been given a task to mount IBM and DELL Rack based server and install esxi in it.
What I done until now is I have put the server on Rack and connected it to switches , and the done the cabling for HBA so that it goes to the FC switch.
I have attached an USB where I am planning to install esxi.
Can anyone please let me know what should I do to get the idrac console or imm console of the server on my laptop which also part of the same office network so that I could install esxi remotely.
After connecting to my switches I tried to access the imm or idrac from my laptop connected in same network using 192.x.x.x IP ( which I read from IBM website ) and I could not reach it.

If you take a look at the back of your servers you should notice that besides the Normal Nics (Probably 2-4) there is one Nic that is completely "separated" from the rest...this is the Nic for the idrac/imm...connect a patch cable to it and assign an IP as Alex mentioned above

Please tell me how to assign an IP to the ILO or DRAC card , cause I do not have any console to see the boot process or BIOS.
How to get the console to view the boot process so that I could assign IP....

Don't you have a physical Monitor/keyboard attached on the servers ? are you operating completely remotely ?
If you connect the ILO/DRAC to the switch DHCP should kick in and assign them an IP

iLO defaults to DHCP so if it is all wired up correctly you can install a DHCP server on the management network and look in the DHCP tables for them. Not sure it repeatedly tries for an address though so DHCP should be running before powering on.

In the local datacenter I have monitor and Keyboard and sure I will use them to assign IP to the servers.
For my remote office I do not have the liberty to go there directly and do this. I have connected the idrac interface to switch and now I do not know how to find which IP which was given to it by DHCP since I do not know the MAC of this interface.

did you download the OEM versions of ESXi from Dell and IBM (and not from VMware!) ?
ASKER
yea I downloaded the custom version of esxi install from vendor
also install on SD or USB flash drive
ASKER
yes, we are planning to install on SD or USB. Correct.
It really hasn't got anything to do with VMware or virtualization, if there is someone on site you can get them to look at the servers to see if there is a label on them with MAC, username and password for the remote management ports. HP used to tie it on a cardboard label, not sure if they still do.

Dell idrac or IBM IMM do they take IP from DHCP if we plug it onto switch, cause when I see documentation online they seem to have an IP in 192.168.x.x private subnet by default.
