The gist is: &nbsp;When Windows thinks that the system partition is so low on free space that mandatory Updates might not fit, it starts compressing folders so that Updates will fit.<br />
<br />
Note: &nbsp;The system <i>partition</i> -- not the system <i>drive</i>. &nbsp;The system drive might be a 1000 GB drive, but if the system partition is only 60 GB Windows will run out of space quickly.<br />
<br />
This would fit with the problem occurring about the time of a logged update.<br />
<br />
Check the available space on the C: partition and see if this is the case.

Check the advanced properties for the folders which have been compressed. &nbsp;Chances are you will find that they have been changed to enable compression without your permission, per the second comment at the page cited above.<br />

You can try disabling compression for those folders, but if Update is involved it seems probable that it will happen again at some time in the future.

Dr. Klahn - Do I need to create a new partition here? I right clicked and looked everywhere did not see where I could increase the size of the partitioned drive which is relatively small.<br />

Ah, I get it now. It is out of my control other than the manual fix. I did some cleanup and updating on my network and added an Administrator account and permissions. I thought it was something I did myself and Microsofts Update wrecked it. So I can blame my Microsoft for this like I blame my mother for all my other problems. Dr. Klahn, there is no <i>&quot;do not compress this drive.&quot;</i> setting. You can set to compress &quot;this drive&quot;, &quot;files in this folder&quot; or &quot;this file&quot;. And as always the more granular setting overrides the more generic one. There is nothing wrong with that.

Folders in Windows 10 Pro started compressing. I don't remember ever setting that and knowingly would not compress any folders. Can anyone tell me what is or has caused this?
