You need to go to:<br />
<br />
1) Windows &gt;&gt;&nbsp;Services<br />
2) Go to SQL Server in the Services list.<br />
3) Right click &gt;&gt;&nbsp;Start<br />
4) Perform the same steps for SQL Server Agent in the Services list.<br />
5) Try connecting the SQL Server again.<br />

I was able to connect to the server having set the various services to automatic and started them.<br />
For some reason I have 2 servers installed &nbsp;SQLEXPRESS AND SQLEXPRESS1 and don't recall how that happened.<br />
Does that matter or do I need to delete one ?<br />

I tried to start SQL Server Agent however was greeted by an error message &nbsp; 'The SQL Server Agent (SQLEXPRESS1) service on local computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs'<br />
any idea why ?<br />

That is because the port is not set to 1433. You need to set the TCP port to 1433.<br />

I have set TCP to 1433 but still could not start Server Agent.<br />
error message &nbsp; &nbsp;'did not start in timely manner' or words to that effect.<br />

Yes, if you aren't really using or need 2 instances of SQL Server, then you can uninstall one of the instances to save server resources.<br />
If you might be needing it for later, then just stop the Services of that SQLExpress instance..<br />

Yes, SQL Server Agent Service isn't applicable for Express edition of SQL Server and hence you are getting that error. Kindly ignore that service..
