How to correct issue with "Cannot resolve DNS issue, Cannot reach DNS server"

Have a network running as a domain.   I know the  DC should be running the domain but the router in this case is.  All of a sudden 4 of the 5 computers cannot reach the DNS,   They are a mixture of Windows 7 and Windows 10, the server is running Server 2012   One computer and the DC can get to the internet.  The computers that cannot get to the internet can see the server and the shared drives.   Any ideas how to bring all the computers to being able to access the internet without getting the message that it cannot reach the DNS  Server?

You need to change the clients to point to the DC for DNS and DC to forward DNS requests, via a forwarder, to the router
To reaffirm what Shaun said, having a DC that is not working as DNS server on your domain is what creates problems just like this. Even though it may have worked for weeks/months/or even years.... it is not the correct way of doing things.

So if I set the server up as the DNS master about how long does that take so I can tell my customer how long they will be down for, please?
Should the DHCP be switched over also from the router to the server?
Should the DHCP be switched over also from the router to the server?
This is optional. However, if you have DHCP handled by the router, you need to make sure that it is providing the correct DNS server information. Otherwise, you're still going to have problems.
IT's typically easier to manage if you do DHCP on the server as well as DNS, but as masnrock said, it's optional.
Your client won't typically suffer and outage for switching the DNS over and actually they probably wont feel the switch of DHCP either, the leases the systems have will keep them running while you make the changes and when the systems are rebooted they will acquire from the new servers.
