What's your use-case?

Just remove the NTFS read permission from all users.

Hi Murray,

When you say, password-protected folder, what exactly is your goal? You want to encrypt the folder's content or you want a password prompt to appear when someone tries to access that folder?

Chinmay.

I want to use VB.net code to create a folder that cannot be accessed. Even if that means that no one can access it

Well, that's not exactly a use-case.. but this can be still done by NTFS permissions.

Hi Murray,

Security by Obscurity - never ended well for anyone but yes you can remove the NTFS permission as suggested by others (I am not being captain obvious here - my suggestion would be to make something radical - which is absolutely possible) or use steganography or disk based encryption(Overkill). There is a source code available (https://www.veracrypt.fr/en/Home.html) which has lots of such tricks but that code is super complex if you are new to security scene.

Also, if you just want to hide files from the users and want to keep them safe why not try exploring Isolated Storage (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/standard/io/isolated-storage). It is a bit advanced topic but has been in the play since the beginning of the .Net(along with AppDomains).

Regards,
Chinmay.
