Volume Shadow Copy missing from server 2016

Server 2016 - Patches up to date - Running as a Workgroup.

I use a cloud backup for my daily backup. I am getting my backup daily, but recently, I started getting a notification of a warning.

The warning is that the software was unable to take a Snapshot (Shadow Copy) the warning states that the service does not exist.

I looked in services.msc and sure enough there is no Volume Shadow Copy service.

I am looking for a way to reinstall VSS without rebuilding the server.

Thank you

The bottom half of this article is instructions to reregister the VSS services though you might want to run each REGSVR32 command separately or add pauses between each line so you can read any errors they generate:

First off - Thank You

ran all the commands one at at time and encountered no errors.

When reattempting vss list writers it still says that vss is not a valid service.
When looking at services.msc the Volume Shadow Copy Service is not there.

Possibly a reboot, I cannot do that while the office is open.
And you did both of these from the end of that article?
Start the previously stopped services:
Net Start SWPRV
Net Start VSS
I did both of those.

The first made no comment, same as the ones above it.

The second one said that van was not a service and it still does not showing services.
Thank you- sorry, forgot my manners.
In Regedit, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VSS and verify it exists.  If it does, try to modify something (anything); but, remember to change it back if it works.
You may need to reboot in order to load the changes so we may have to wait until you can.
Was the backup working at some point?  How long ago was that?
Thank you- My apologies for the delay. I got distracted.

- the key is there.
- I can modify it
- I will reboot. Probably early AM tomorrow. The doctor uses it till 0200hrs
Good Morning.
I just rebooted the server.
the shadow services provider started successfully
VSS is not shown in services and when started says that it is not a valid service
Thank You
What is the exact (!!) error message when you do NET START VSS?
Try moving the volume shadow copy storage area to a different volume

Please try this

Caution: When you change the location of the shadow copy storage area, all previous shadow copies are deleted.

Click Start, and then click Computer.
Right-click any of the volumes listed, and then click Configure Shadow Copies.
Click the volume that is currently used for the volume shadow copy storage area, and then click Settings.
Note: If shadow copies of the volume are enabled, you must first disable them by clicking the volume, and then clicking Disable.

Set the volume shadow copy area volume to a volume with more storage capacity by selecting the volume from the drop-down list under Storage area, and then click OK.
Make sure that the volume is still selected, and click Enable. If you are asked to confirm that you want to enable shadow copies, click Yes.
Click OK to exit.
Check the volume that contains the shadow copy storage area for errors or hardware issues
To check the volume that contains the shadow copy storage area for errors or hardware issues:

Click Start, click Run, type diskmgmt.msc, and then click OK.
In Disk Management, click View, click Top, and then select Disk List.
In Disk Management, click View, click Bottom, and then select Volume List.
Make sure that Disk Management displays an Online status for fixed disks and a Healthy status for volumes. For disk status descriptions, seehttp://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=103403. For volume status descriptions, see http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=103404.
Verify
To verify that the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) has enough storage space to create and maintain shadow copies:

Open an elevated Command Prompt window by clicking Start, pointing to All Programs, clicking Accessories, right-clicking Command Prompt, and then clicking Run as administrator.
Type vssadmin list shadowstorage at the command prompt. The Maximum Shadow Copy Storage space should be at least 300 MB.
Use vssadmin commands as needed to change the shadow copy storage area association and configuration.
For more information about the vssadmin command, including usage examples, see http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/library/df7eb505-43c6-42af-ab42-3095f96ffc271033.mspx.
Can you see it under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\VSS?

Andy,
I looked at all three images and did not see your error message for NET START VSS.
Because I messed up my attachments. I will fix
Hello,

Please check what you have already done and tell me if it is correct or not:

You executed the following commands to validate the VSS service that this case does not appear in the list of Windows Server 2016 services.

vssadmin list writers
Net Stop VSS
Net Stop SWPRV
Net Start SWPRV
Net Start VSS

1- Please share the screens of the results that indicate once you execute the commands.

2- Execute the following command to validate when VSS providers have installed on your computer and share the results.

vssadmin list providers

3- When executing the sfc / scannow command, integrity problems were found, some errors? or was the scan positive? You checked in enlance to provide you.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/929833/use-the-system-file-checker-tool-to-repair-missing-or-corrupted-system

4- We also validate the event viewer to observe what errors we find regarding VSS.

5- Do you have a backup tool that has been integrated with the VSS service?

Optional:
Can you try to repair the operating system? Is it a production server? What role does it fulfill?

I remain attentive to your comments.
Here is the file that I forgot to attach showing error when I attempt to start vss

Here is the snap of stop / start and list providers

Well ...... Good News / Bad news

SFC /scannow found and fixes some files.

Net Start vss still does not get vss going.

Results of scan and snip of it running are attached.

I cannot say it enough - Thank you for your help and sticking with me.

Hello

Please validate the following:

1- Observe if the swprv.dll library is found.
      Path: C: \ Windows \ system32.

2- See if the liberia swprv.dll is found.
Route: Run Regedit, go to the next route
      MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Services \ swprv

3- Validate that the following services are running:
      rpc extrem asignator
      DCOM server process initiator

If one of the services is stopped, start it manually.

VSS depends on both services for its operation.

I remain attentive to the results of the tests.

regards..
Sorry for the delay, I was onsite elsewhere a couple days.

Here are the snaps that you requested.

Again, Thank you very much.
