After failed windows 10 update, USB devices recognized but do not function.
After a failed automatic update of windows 10 pro, the computer wasn't able to find the boot device. After a restart, it resolved that problem on it's own but created a new one. It is not letting me use the usb keyboard and/or mouse. There is no cursor or response to any clicks or keystrokes. If I use a linux live cd or even the windows 10 install disk, the keyboard and mouse work fine. When I unplug the keyboard or mouse and plug in back in, the system shows that it's installing the device and then indicates it's ready to use but nothing works. I've tried several different keyboards and mice, have used every usb ports on the computer without any luck.
I have done a system restore from the windows 10 setup disk but that had no affect.
Anyone have a idea on what I can try next?
Thanks for any help with this problem.
Regards,
Bill

You should download windows setup and start it from within your running windows in order to perform a repair-installation (aka "inplace upgrade). Settings, programs and files are kept that way.
I agree with the above.
You can also try DISM. Open cmd.exe with Run as Administrator.
dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
If no, then Repair Install as McKnife suggests.

it's going to be hard to do either of these, while voted to the busted windows 10, if the keyboard and mouse don't work. You may need to create an appropriate win 10 media to boot from

Fred has it nailed regarding getting anything running. Without any keyboard / mouse support, the other suggestions just aren't possible. I'll see if I can do an inplace upgrade from the windows media. I'll download the latest using the media creation tool.
Not hard. Simply boot setup media and do certain modifications.
Activate the administrator account and add a script to its autostart folder, then setup autologon to the administrator account.
If you need help with that, I will add details.

McKnife: if you can provide more details, I'd appreciate it. If I remember right, you can't do an inplace upgrade from the media. It has to be done on the computer. FYI: The computer logs on automatically to an administrative account called 'owner'. Does it make sense just to add the script to that autostart folder?
Also (as an alternative) you can use the Media Creation Link, make a USB key and just run Setup from the USB Key

Windows 10 is running, so click on the Download button (not Upgrade Button, select Save.
Create a USB Windows Installation key and then run Setup on the USB Key.
This will launch the Repair and proceed normally

UAC needs to be off, first. You'll be able to make that happen by modifying the registry. Only then can autostart work hands-free.
So first, extract setup to c:\setup, then disable UAC, then add a batch to the auto start folder that goes

when you plug the keyboard or mouse in a new usb port you must wait at least a couple minutes as windows could be installing drivers for these devices. Unplugging the devices before the drivers for the keyboard and mouse are finished installing may result in a corrupted driver for that port as a result the keyboard and mouse do not work. When windows installs drivers for keyboards, mice or any other usb device, the drivers are tied to that particular port. If you plug in a new usb device into that usb port then the drivers for the new device will be tied to that particular port. I would do a force shutdown of the computer then restart it and wait a couple minutes after windows restart to see if the keyboard mouse are not detected.
i would run the windows 10 media creation tool, and select keep my files option https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=691209
