How to extend a windows cluster disk running on top of VMware
Hello,
I am trying to expand a volume on a cluster of Windows 2016 VM's. The cluster contains 2 nodes and they are all running on top of vSphere. When I try to expand a hard disk in vSphere I receive the message below from the vcenter console:
The disk extend operation failed: The virtual disk requires a feature not supported by this program
Hot-extend is currently supported only for VMFS flat virtual disks without snapshots opened in persistent mode.
I also tried shutting down the Node1(active) and then expanding the vm disk. However, I receive a message stating there is a locked file:
The disk extend operation failed: Failed to lock the file
Although, this could be due to the clustered aspect of it. Can someone help me clear my webs and tell me if I am not following the proper procedures or if I am actually experiencing an issue within vmware while trying to expand the disk?
I am simply trying to expand the vmdk in vsphere and then go into the windows server and expand it using diskmgmt

Thank you

Thank you all for the feedback. Andrew, we are not using CiB.
I will try shutting down the cluster. However, I would need to establish a maintenance period.
I am taking this as I can't really extend the disk while it is hot due to the fact that its part of a MSCS..?

Are you using virtual scsi bus sharing ?
"I am simply trying to expand the vmdk in vsphere"
e.g. cluster on VMDKs and not cluster on iSCSI or FC LUNs ?
