Draytek 2925 VPN, can't access server via name... dns not working

I have a simple setup... I have enabled the draytek L2TP with IPsec VPN which works fine.

I have a server on site which i access using \\IP-MAINSERVER
The issue is that when I am off site and I VPN in, I cant access the server using \\IP-MAINSERVER, I have to use the IP address.

Why is this?

I wear a lot of hats...

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

You either have to set your server up for DNS coming via VPN, or for simple setups as I have, use your HOSTS file.

192.168.x.y      Server name 1            # Company server 1
192.168.x.w   Server name 2            # Company Server 2
192.168.x.z      Server name 3            # Company Server 3

ah yes, that is a work around.
if I wanted to make it work properly, what needs to be done?

Check "Use default gateway on remote network" on the VPN network connection.  Sounds like you're split tunneled.  That should get you going.

Or, you can manually change the DNS on the VPN network to point to the DNS server on site.
